APA 7 reference generator
Reference
In-text citation
The generator covers three source types. For others, see the reference list guides: video, podcast, thesis and AI tools.
How do I use it?
- Choose the source type.
- Enter authors, one per line, as "Rivera, Maria." The generator turns the first name into an initial.
- Fill in the date, title and source details.
- Copy the reference and paste it into your list, in alphabetical order.
What should I always check?
- Title capitalization: only the first word and proper nouns. The generator does not fix it.
- Italics: the generator applies them, but Word can drop them on paste. Check the hanging indent and italics.
- Group authors: type the full name of the organization on one line.
- Link: it should work and be as stable as possible.
What about outside generators?
The citation generator comparison reviews outside options and their limits.
Checklist
- Correct source type
- Sentence-case title
- Reference checked against its guide
- List in alphabetical order
- In-text citation with the same last name and year
Frequently asked questions
Are APA citation generators reliable?
They are a good start but often get title capitalization, group authors and dates wrong. Always compare the result with the guide for that source type before pasting it into your paper.
What information do I need to generate a reference?
Author or authors, publication date, title, publisher, journal or site name, and the link or DOI if there is one. With no author, the title takes the author's place. With no date, write n.d.
Does this generator save my data?
No. It runs in your browser with JavaScript. There are no accounts and nothing is sent to a server. If you reload or close the page, the data you typed is gone, so copy your reference first.
